Seventeen – The Debacle Part 1

Brent

After that megawatt kiss, I don’t sleep a wink. I tossed and turned all night, wrestling with the fact that I’ve fallen for Libby. This fake dating plan is suddenly no longer fake. At least not for me. But what about Libby? I felt like she was having a good time with me, but maybe she’s just a fantastic actress. I do remember her frightening ability to tell a convincing lie when we were kids.

When Libby arrives at the office the next morning, we avoid each other for the first hour. She stays at her desk, working quietly while I sit at my desk and stew. I can’t concentrate on business as I mull over the developing relationship with my assistant.

This subdued version of Libby is unfamiliar. It’s like I’m walking down a path and don’t know whether it’s going to be a minefield or as smooth as ice. Is she feeling the same way I do or is she regretting our impulsive kiss? I refuse to apologize for violating one of her rules. We both fully participated in that mind-numbing kiss. She can’t deny that.

Deciding that if we have any chance to move forward to an authentic relationship—and I desperately want that—I’ve got to explain the prom night debacle in hopes that she’ll finally forgive me. Or at least understand my side of what happened.

“Libby, can you come in here for a minute?” I yell, barricaded behind my desk, keeping the wooden surface as a buffer between me and Libby. I need to get this story out and not be tempted to kiss her.

She peeks her head in my office, hesitating beside the doorframe, a look of nervousness on her face. “What do you need, Mr. Masterson?”

Her formality throws me off. Maybe she didn’t enjoy that kiss as much as I did?

“Please sit down,” I say, waving my hand towards the chairs positioned in front of my desk.

She avoids making eye contact as she sits down, staring instead at the notebook and pen clasped in her hand.

“I want to explain what happened on prom night. You need to understand my side of the story.”

Her eyes fly to mine. “That’s not necessary! I was there, remember?”

Groaning, I pinch the bridge of my nose. “Please? I want to give you my perspective.”

She purses her lips and scowls, then shrugs. “Fine. Go ahead.”

Her reaction isn’t encouraging, but I plow ahead with the story . . .

Eight Years Ago

I’m a bundle of nerves as the clock ticks towards the time I’m supposed to pick up my prom date. It’ll be a miracle if I manage not to sweat through my fancy shirt. I’ve been dressed in the rented tux and shirt for over an hour.

My emotions are all over the place, bouncing between dread and excitement. Griff’s warnings about dating his sister ring ominously inside my head. Griff confronted me outside my locker the day after I asked Libby to the dance.

“What are you doing, man?” he hissed between gritted teeth.
